People often mistakenly look at the Ten Commandments as a set of rules that, if followed, will guarantee entrance into heaven after death. What a divergence from the true purpose of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are an illustrative summary of the 613 commandments contained in the Old Testament Law to teach us that we cannot perfectly obey the Law. The Apostle Paul added: “What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin” (Romans 7:7-11).
No one can perfectly obey the Ten Commandments. Their message is to demonstrate that we have all sinned (Romans 3:23) and are therefore in need of God’s mercy and grace, available only through faith in Jesus Christ.
Christ states: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Matthew 5:17-19. Then He summed it all into the “greatest commandment”: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. This is the first and great commandment. The second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as; yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 23:37-40).
