Mercy
“Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful” (Luke 6:36). What is mercy? Mercy, as it is understood in the Bible, is forgiveness that withholds punishment.
The great example of mercy is seen in our salvation. God showed mercy on us when he sacrificed his son, Christ Jesus, on the Cross to pay the price for our sins. The greatest example of God's mercy is Jesus paying our debt on the cross, when we deserved to die.
As like in the parable of the prodigal son returning to his father: when we repent, God shows us mercy and welcomes us with open arms. Now we are to live and extend mercy to others, giving God the glory when people ask us “why”—for we are receivers of forgiveness without punishment. Mercy is giving people what they need, not what they deserve.
“Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back . . . Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36 ESV). Being merciful opens doors for the gospel.
